Catalogue Note

Originating with his minutely detailed Autumn Glory: The Old Mill (1869), Grimshaw painted a series of desirable, quintessentially unique Autumnal scenes throughout the 1870's and 1880's. Late October offers an excellent illustration of Grimshaw's employment of a golden sky to enhance the amber-colored seasonal landscape.

Grimshaw inscribed many of his canvases of this period with ''Knostrop Hall'' on the reverse. Though these pictures often depict a stately manor house, Knostrop Hall does not refer to the home pictured, but instead the manor Grimshaw himself purchased and inhabited from 1870. Grimshaw believed in the necessity of an authentic flow between his painting and daily life; Knostrop Hall was a 17th century manor similar to the estate depicted in Late October.
