Catalogue Note
Many popular 19th century painters were inspired by the customs and costumes of the 18th century. Flameng, who is most well known for his portraits of the British Royal family, which today hang in Buckingham Palace, often revealed this taste for an earlier time in his paintings of women. In the present work, his model is clad in a dress, which was in style between 1829/30, and wears shoes from the late 18th century. The contours of her arms and the sensual curve of her legs are visible beneath the sheer fabric. The model is believed to be the aritist's niece.
