Catalogue Note

Sir Charles Malcolm (1782-1851) was born at Burnfoot in Dunfriesshire on 5th September 1782. He entered the Royal Navy in 1795 and quickly rose through the ranks to become a Captain. In November 1827 he was appointed superintendent of the Bombay marine. After his arrival in India the following year he quickly and effectively developed the Bombay marine and it became known as 'the Indian Navy'. Malcolm held the post for ten years and it is during this time that Houghton drew the present watercolours of his cottage 'The Craigs'.
