Catalogue Note

This hauntingly beautiful image challenges the viewer with Pyne's characteristic blend of contrasting motifs. The simplified skull floats above a stylized torso of fine cross-hatching, the sombre motifs blended with the surrounding foliage of delicately rendered green and white leaves. The central figure is set within a bold blood red pool, where white blossoms emerge from the dark void surrounding the figure.
Pyne shot to fame in 1968 when he received an award as one of the most promising and outstanding artists of the city of Calcutta.  The current work produced in the late 1960's must be considered one of his most important works from this early period of intense creativity.
