Von Zügel (see also lot 39) trained at the Stuttgart Academy, before moving to Munich in 1869, where he became one of the leading animal painters of the Munich School, following in the tradition of Heinrich Bürkel (lot 22) and Friedrich Voltz (lot 38). He moved in a circle of artists who included the animalier Anton Braith and Gotthardt Kuehl (lot 58), who interpreted traditional subjects using a freer, more colouristic palette and impressionistic brushwork.
