Description

Square ko-Kutani ruri ginsai plate
mid-17th century
on four feet, decorated in iron-red enamel, silver and gilt with clouds and Mt. Fuji on a light blue ground
7 1/2 by 7 1/2 in. (19 by 19cm.)

Ruri is the indigo-colored glaze produced by adding a little cobalt to feldspar. In the Yuan period (1279-1368), this glaze was already in use in Jingdezhen, China. In Japan, this glaze was employed in the early 17th century for Arita, Kutani and Himetani wares.
