English, late 14th/ 15th century
a gold diamond set ring
plain shank, the bezel of sloping box form set with a pyramid cut diamond
diameter 2 cm., Nin.
Provenance:
Found near Wartling Sussex; disclaimed treasure trove.
The diamond at this time was thought to make the wearer invincible. The pyramid cut of the dimaond would also have enables the wearer to write on glass, a practice which was popular at the time.
