In light of the current circumstances and governmental recommendations we write to inform you that we are rescheduling our March 26th sale of Art Impressionniste et Moderne and our March 27th sale Œuvres sur Papier. These sales will now be held on June 5th and 6th respectively.
While we wait and look forward to welcoming you again in our Parisian galleries we will stay in touch via the Sotheby’s website and social media:
Our catalogues will remain on-line and can be accessed below as well as other information and stories regarding the exceptional works being featured in these sales.
From rare and wonderful sheets by Eugène Delacroix and Victor Hugo, through to works by Sam Szafran from the Louis-Dreyfus collection, the Works on Paper sale is a voyage at the heart of the creative process of many modern masters. Among the key works, the sale presents an important portrait of Dora Maar created by Picasso in 1936 at the very beginning of their relationship. The work testifies to the nascent bond, and deep tenderness, between the artist and his young photographer muse posing in an Andalusian dress. This beautiful portrait has not been on the market since its acquisition during the mythical Dora Maar sale in Paris in 1998.
The sale presents other rare works such as a superb figure study, Femme juive en costume de fête, from Delacroix’s Moroccan sketchbooks and a unique black conté crayon drawing by Signac, Femme cousant, which is a study for his first Neo-Impressionist painting Les Modistes and emblematic of his artistic complicity with Georges Seurat. 20th Century art is also well represented with works by Juan Miró, a beautiful charcoal by Henri Matisse, and a large and important oil on paper from 1944 by Wilfredo Lam which he infuses with the magical voodoo figures of his native Cuba.
