This December, Sotheby’s will host Art of Travel, a new themed auction exploring the enduring lure of travel.
In the 19th Century, art and society were transformed by the possibilities offered by ever more affordable and convenient travel and transport. Views by nineteenth-century artist-travellers of inspiring destinations around Europe and further afield, from Marrakech to Venice, and Paris to Istanbul, will lead the sale. For the first time at Sotheby’s these will be presented together with a diverse selection of photographs, maps, and luxury travel collectibles such as Louis Vuitton vintage luggage. Appealing to the twenty-first traveller, the sale will attract both established collectors and new buyers, with estimates starting from £2,000.
An online auction, highlights from the sale will be exhibited during 19th Century Week at Sotheby’s in December, and the sale will be supported by an innovative promotional campaign both digitally and in print. Sotheby’s online-only auctions bring our 275 years of experience, unparalleled expertise, brand recognition and innovative promotional strategies to a thriving digital marketplace.
Consignments for the sale will be accepted until 4 November.
