Sotheby’s March Prints & Multiples auction in London features an array of important Old Master, Modern and Contemporary masterworks. The sale represents 500 years of art history, from early Northern etchings to vibrant Pop screenprints.
The Old Master section is led by three First Edition Goya portfolios: his iconic and dramatic La Tauromaquia, Los Caprichos, and Los Desastres de la Guerra, while the Modern section boasts fine examples of German expressionist woodcuts, including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s affectionate rendering of his fellow Die Brücke member Otto Mueller. This animated, textural print demonstrates Kirchner’s avant-garde approach, while bearing a remarkable resemblance to the subject. Finally, the sale will culminate with the Contemporary section, which includes a survey of Andy Warhol’s greatest graphic achievements from his early career as an illustrator to his later, experimental After Munch screenprints.
