This Autumn following the great success of the Spring sales, Sotheby’s will be showcasing a superb selection of international Design ranging from Art Nouveau to Contemporary Design which will feature some iconic pieces by Jean Dunand, Eugène Printz, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Royère, Paul Evans or Maarten Baas to name a few. An Evening Session will be dedicated to the iconic work of Diego Giacometti and will celebrate his creativity.
Diego Giacometti’s vocabulary of forms is highly inventive and executed perfectly. Consoles aux grenouilles illustrates his perfect combination of rigor and poetry; a defining quality to his works. Diego has this incredible abiliy to give life to his sculptures, the little frogs positioned in each corner of these consoles look as though they are ready to jump out and become alive.
20th century Design collectors will have an appreciation for the inventiveness of Maarten Bass Grandmother Clock which has been reinterpreted from the classic grandfather clock. This piece is part of the iconic series, Real Time, launched by the artist in 2009 at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The series is composed of videos, each 12 hours long. Inside the clock, behind the glass, the viewer is able to distinguish the silhouette of a grandmother painting the hands and wiping them away again and again every minute, showing itself as a timekepper of the passage of time. In this piece Maarten Baas achieves a great tribute to the flight of time.
