Sotheby’s Books and Manuscripts department is delighted to invite participation in our December online timed auction of Fine Books and Manuscripts. The sale is highlighted by a selection of Property from the Library of Joseph Vales, including a fine “Spes” binding by Jacob Pandelaert of Louvain; Property from a Florida Collector, including the very fine Cortlandt Bishop-William Stockhausen copy of Shakespeare’s Second Folio; and further offerings from the Sporting and Travel Library of Arnold “Jake” Johnson.
Additional highlights include a page from "The Beatles Agreement," the 1974 document that that formally dissolved the band’s partnership, signed by all four Beatles, and a first edition of José Penso de la Vega’s Confusión de Confusiones, dialogos curiosos entre un philosopho agudo, un mercader discreto, y un accionista erudite — the first account of a stock exchange, with fewer than ten copies recorded — sold to benefit the Rare Book Acquisition Fund of the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Bidding will be open from 3-17 December, with a public view from 9-12 December alongside Fine Autograph Letters and Manuscripts from a Distinguished Private Collection: Part II. Outside of the scope of this public view, private viewings are available by appointment.
