The week of October 16 devoted to modern art at Sotheby's in Paris has now ended, with a grand total of €21.5 million. Three sales were staged at the Galerie Charpentier, featuring major works by some of the leading artists of the 20th century, several with outstanding provenances.
The week ended with the new sale date for Sotheby's Paris Impressionist and Modern Art. Once again, the international market confirmed buyers' intense interest in Marc Chagall, represented by four lots in this catalogue. One, the Bouquet Blanc, a magnificent synthesis of the most fundamental themes in his work, garnered €907,500 (lot 311). Last but not least, the works from the collection of Eleanor Post Close & Antal Post de Bekessy all found buyers, including a drawing by Egon Schiele, Femme debout, which fetched €283,500 (lot 322).
For the first time this year, the auction of Impressionist and Modern art will take place during the FIAC (October 22 2017), after the Modernités : de Rodin à Soulages auction (October 19), where the echoes of a century will resonate between modern and contemporary art, and the auction of the Arthur Brandt collection (October 21) which will reveal the complex beauty of Surrealism and its nebula.
This auction of Impressionist and Modern art will take place seven months after the auction associated with the auction of works on paper inaugurated during the Salon du dessin, and which thus initiated a change in rhythm and schedule. From the first sparks of Impressionism to the dawn of the 1950s, the Paris auction will offer a selective panorama of art in France and abroad. Belgian art will again be in honour, among others, after the world record sale of a painting by Ensor in Paris (Skeleton Stopping the Masks 7,2 M€ in December 2016). By Anto Carte, a Descent from the Cross whose composition follows a dramatic diagonal is particularly remarkable. As is the strangeness of Spilliaert’s scene showing a young woman leaning on a rail, irradiant with colour. Thus, a few metres away from the Grand Palais’s glass dome, the Galerie Charpentier will be showing works which contain and reveal a perception and a representation that is different from reality, whether experienced or dreamt. It is indeed the best of modern art in all its diversity.
