Results: The Magnificent Jewels and Fine Jewels auctions in New York achieved $29.7 million, with Sotheby's worldwide jewelry sales crossing $500 million in 2016. Over two days, Sotheby's sold more than 650 pieces of jewelry with storied provenance and iconic designs.
Spanning more than 150 years of Jewelry history, Property from the Collection of Marjorie S. Fisher exceeded expectations, achieving $10.6 million, and important designs from the family of Betsey Cushing Whitney & John Hay Whitney brought in $2.3 million, double the high estimate.
Auction Details: The first session of the December Magnificent Jewels sale includes Property From the Collection of Marjorie S. Fisher, Palm Beach. Mrs. Fisher’s eclectic and discerning eye for design and style is epitomized in her encyclopedic collection covering more than 150 years of jewelry history. Including important pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co. and JAR, this session is led by an impressive 18.04 carat, D color marquise-shaped diamond ring. Many of Mrs. Fisher’s jewels have storied and distinguished provenance, having formerly been in the collection of other celebrated philanthropists including those of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, Mrs. Paul Mellon and Mrs. Brooke Astor – to name a few.
