Cowdray Ruins&nbsp;were commissioned from James Pryde by Annie Pearson, the 1st Viscountess Cowdray, and who was Pryde’s his principal patron. They are considered one of Pryde’s most acclaimed series, and they were to hold pride of place in the Cowdray’s residence, Dunecht House, in the great library designed by George Edmund Street. Pryde worked on this series over a decade between 1910 and 1922 and they each demonstrate his unique energetic and bold approach to abstraction. At a time when most British artists looked around to depicting scenes of reality, Pryde champions the power of the Romantic, literary and surreal imagination in these masterworks.
