The Dr. David L. Harrar II Collection (Lots 1039-1044 and 1046-1052) is a scholarly gathering of books primarily focused on Charles Dickens, one of the most prolific and best-loved authors of the last two centuries. The collection demonstrates a profound understanding of the author and his wider cultural impact, with highlights including the author’s own copy of Little Dorrit, other volumes from Dickens' personal library, an extra-illustrated copy of Oliver Twist, and first editions of his major works, many in their original publisher’s bindings. Further enriching the collection are numerous artworks by “Phiz” and "Kyd," Dickens's chosen illustrators, providing insight into the creative collaboration between author and artist.&nbsp; In addition to the wealth of Dickens material, the collection is complemented by a selection of works by William Shakespeare (Lots 1063, 1065-1067, and 1072), rounding out an offering that reflects Dr. Harrar’s careful curation of two of the most important figures in English literature.
