Foreword

A Collector from Days Gone By: Jean-Paul Chazal (1944–2023)

Bamana Art from the Jean-Paul Chazal Collection

Paris

Sotheby’s is proud to present the sale Arts Africains de la Collection Jean-Paul Chazal in collaboration with François de Ricqlès Conseil and the support of Pierre Amrouche and Alain de Monbrison. Jean-Paul Chazal, eminent figure among African art collectors has established himself through a notoriously sharp eye and his legal work in the domains of copyright and press law as well as the arts market. Through his collection shines a singular taste for Sub Saharan African art and its wood and metal works. As rarely seen before, the collection highlights a selection of the minuscule, objects and ornaments in iron, copper and bronze, in particular micro-masterpieces from the Akan, Ashanti, Gan, Lobi, Dogon, Kulango and Senoufo cultures. Close to some of the leading gallery owners and collectors, this collection resonates with the names of Doctor Pierre Harter, whose Bamana monkey mask, crown jewel of the collection, bears his name, René Rasmussen and his famous Senoufo mask or a rare Baga bird figure, or the great women pioneers of African art, Hélène Leloup or Maine Durieu etc. and many others who left their mark on his generation.
