Sotheby’s is delighted to announce Modern and Contemporary Japanese Art&nbsp;this 24 – 31 October 2023. Including Property from an Important Private Collection of contemporary painting, ceramics and photography, the sale showcases boundary-defying Japanese artists active in the 20th and 21st centuries working across various mediums. The sale begins with a recently discovered work by Leonard Tsuguhara Foujita, Jeune femme en peignoir, and is followed by two examples of six-panel folding screens including the calligraphic work by Teshigahara Sofu inscribed Nichirin, or the sun. Sugai Kumi’s monumental Grand Lac is offered alongside two examples of the tireless experiments in abstraction by Yamada Masaaki. The sale concludes with the stoneware and porcelain works of potters Tsujimura Shiro and his two sons Kai and Yui, Kuroda Taizo and Ogawa Machiko.
