Sotheby’s Important Design sale presents a curated survey of outstanding Design from the 20th to the 21st century. Important sculptures and furniture by Les Lalanne will accompany a selection of pieces by Eileen Gray, Alberto and Diego Giacometti and Jean Dunand as well as important mid-century works by Alexandre Noll. Defining icons of postwar modernism and contemporary design are represented with the very best from each movement, including masterworks by Shiro Kuramata, Harry Bertoia, George Nakashima, Ingrid Donat, Joris Laarman and many more. A cut-out rectangle in the torso of ‘Vache Paysage (Grand Modèle)’ – François-Xavier Lalanne’s magnificent large-scale cow sculpture – quite literally reframes our view of nature.

Two screens by the Irish architect and designer showcase her mastery of Japanese lacquer techniques – as well as her stunning embrace of Modernist abstraction.

An important coffee table by the American woodworker and designer beautifully expresses his interpretation of ‘mingei,’ a philosophy of vernacular craft.

Though distinct in aesthetic and influence, Alberto &amp; Diego Giacometti and Claude &amp; François-Xavier Lalanne shared an affinity for mythical and dreamlike designs.
