European Landscapes

When Christopher Wood wrote Olympian Dreamers in 1983 he began his survey by saying; ‘The Victorian classical revival in painting was, as one might expect, more Victorian than classical. It tells us a great deal more about Victorian and Edwardian England than it does about ancient Greece or Rome.’ The scenes in a Roman Bath-house, the white-washed interiors of a Greek home, on sunlit terraces overlooking the Mediterranean or Pompeian gardens where beautiful women idle away their time in luxurious leisure, are Victorian re-imaginings of the spirit of the ancient past. The pictures in this sale are wonderful, escapist fantasies of perfect beauty in a world of marble where the sun is always shining – painted by the leading exponents of the late nineteenth century Classical revival; Lord Leighton, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Edward Poynter and John William Godward.

An Earthly Paradise

Georges de Feure is one of the names most synonymous with both the Symbolists and latterly the Art Nouveau movement in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century. A painter, designer of interiors, theatre sets, and furniture, he is as known for his beguiling figural and landscape compositions as he is for the interiors, objects, and furniture he conceived as one of the leading designers. From the distinguished George Encil collection, the following seven works come to the market for the first time in several decades.
