Lynne Drexler Biography
Lynne Drexler was a painter born in 1928 who has carved out a distinct visual lexicon of kaleidoscopic color and brushstroke that has come to redefine the narratives of American abstraction in recent years. Though born near Newport News, Virginia, Drexler relcoated to New York City to further her artistic practice studying with Hans Hoffman and Robert Motherwell, crafting her iconic approach to abstraction through the inspiration she got from the New York downtown art scene. Her characteristic brushstrokes were further honed in her new home at Monhegan Island, Maine, where she first visited in 1963 and found herself immersed with the community and natural beauty the island had to offer. Inspired by these glimpses of visual splendor, Drexler’s paintings have captured a powerful sensibility of radiant beauty.
Despite her extensive body of work, it was not until after the artist’s death in 1999 that the magnitude of her works were truly discovered, after they were often overlooked by the New York establishment. Though under-appreciated for decades, Drexler’s paintings have now become some of the most celebrated and sought-after works in the art world and can be found in the institutional collections of the Portland Museum of Art; the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland; the Provincetown Art Association and Museum; and the Mint Museum, Charlotte, among others.
