Raised in Pennsylvania, Fetherolf completed college at Syracuse University and moved to Los Angeles in 1949 to pursue acting. While in Hollywood, Fetherolf pivoted to set design painting, which they excelled at due to their mastery of realism. He earned attention at 20th Century Fox and Disney, where he designed sets for classics including Zorro, Pollyanna, and Mary Poppins. These successes made Fetherolf realize his potential as a fine artist, and he parted ways with the entertainment industry in 1969 to become a full-time painter.
