Finn Juhl Biography
Finn Juhl was a Scandinavian designer who debuted his design studio in 1945. He first worked for the Vilhelm Lauritzen architecture firm, and began to make connections with other designers at events like the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen. Juhl was influenced by his contemporaries and other modern artists of the time, which is reflected in his furniture. Juhl gained international recognition with the support of people like Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., head of the Department of Industrial Design at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 1951 and 1952, he was awarded the honor of designing the interior of the Trusteeship Council chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Juhl’s work often liaises between contemporary art and furniture of the time, which sometimes resulted in Surrealist forms, organic functional pieces or sculptural Modernist works.
