Ernst Yohji Jaeger Biography

Ernst Yohji Jaeger is a painter born in 1990 who lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany, spending summers in Sapporo, Japan, and having studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Tokyo University of the Arts, Jaeger employs his diverse cultural heritage and broad creative influences to distill a visual lexicon of dreamlike, surreal scenes with wistfully contemplative figures in a subdued yet ethereal palette.

Considering these backgrounds, it is far from surprising that the artist’s paintings resonate with influences and inspirations ranging across time and space, whether it be childhood inspirations like Louise Bourgeois and Yves Klein, interests in memes and Japanese sub-culture, or ongoing dialogues with artists like Helene Schjerfbeck, Lorenzo Lotto, Felice Casorati, and Josef Koudelka. Jaeger’s paintings capture a timeless moment of mysterious symbolism, often featuring androgynous, ageless, and unidentifiable figures facing his self-contained world.

Jaeger’s enchanting canvases have attracted critical attention from across the world. He has been the subject of acclaimed solo exhibitions including Lunatique at Crèvecoeur, Paris, Quince Moon at Croy Nielsen, Vienna, and Lotosesser at 15Orient, New York, and featured in group exhibitions such as and I will wear you in my heart of heart at the Flag Art Foundation, New York, Mon Cherie CoCo at the Institut Français de Tokyo, and Future of Melancholia (Part II) at the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade.
