Constantinos Volanakis Biography

Constantinos Volanakis (1837-1907) was a Greek painter who specialized in maritime scenes. Drawing on the work of Dutch marine artists, Volanakis produced works that often centered around the natural beauty of the Mediterranean, as well as the strength of the Greek navy. Affectionately known as the 'bard of the Greek sea," Volanakis was a major figure in 19th century Greek art, and his work is now held by major institutions within the nation, including the National Gallery and Hellenic Navy.
