The Cecil Beaton Studio Archive is a celebratory record of the 20th century’s most famous figures, documented by one of the most iconic image makers of the age. Sotheby’s is the privileged guardian of over 100,000 negatives and 9,000 vintage prints from the photographer’s personal collection, in which portraits of stars of the stage and screen sit alongside those of royalty, artists, and society’s most glamourous and influential characters.
Cecil Beaton negotiated the transfer of his private archive to Sotheby’s in 1977 in order to preserve its role for future generations. Today, the collection – some of which is still stored in Beaton’s original filing cabinets – is available to licence, lending images for reproduction in print, on film and television and for exhibition worldwide.
"High priest of taste, designer of genius, and intimate of royalty, Cecil Beaton was one of the most stylish photographers ever"
