The Art of the Animal

By Sara Putterman

NEW YORK – From prehistoric cave paintings to the present day, artists have always favoured animals as a subject matter. Not only do animals provide an enormous range of poses and forms, but they can also be used as allegories, references to the exotic or symbols of national pride. Our veritable menagerie of animals in bronze, marble and wood is highlighted by a large collection of bronze animals by the famed naturalist bronzier, Antoine-Louis Barye, as well as more subtle depictions, such as the amazingly intricate dolphin on the side of an important Linke piano and a playful group of lizards scaling up the side of a jardinière.
