Spanish Fashion in Mexico

By Emily Markert

MEXICO CITY – The Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) in Mexico City is currently playing host to the first Latin American exhibition of Cristóbal Balenciaga with a survey of the Spanish master’s designs. Curated by Javier Gonzalez de Durana, the former director of the Museo Cristóbal Balenciaga, the show draws from public and private Spanish and Mexican collections and unites dresses and accessories with sketches, photographs and other works to contextualize the pieces and illustrate the fashion house’s techniques. Sotheby’s Mexico City was able to offer a truly Preferred experience of the exhibition with a private tour a full week ahead of its public opening.

GUESTS HEAR FROM MUSEUM GUIDE MARÍA ORTÍZ INSIDE THE EXHIBITION.

A presentation of the designs of such a master couturier is bound to draw crowds anywhere, but visitors to MAM may be surprised to find that the show specifically illustrates the relationship Balenciaga had with the women of Mexican high society and actresses, such as Dolores del Rio, Maria Felix and Silvia Pinal. This, along with pieces on loan from both Spanish and Mexican institutions, makes the show’s location particularly interesting.

ART AND FASHION ARE CO-MINGLED THROUGHOUT THE EXHIBITION.

Additionally, works by artists such as Diego Rivera and Francisco Camps Ribera are included throughout, putting the garments in an artistic context as well as illustrating similarities between Balenciaga’s world and the world of upper-class Mexico by presenting the modern artistic taste of the period.

A RELAXING OUTDOOR RECEPTION FOLLOWED THE TOUR.

In the spirit of Balenciaga and his glamorous friends and clients, Preferred invited guests to enjoy a glass of champagne on the museum’s outdoor veranda following the tour.
