In the second week of July, the Book Department will present two exceptional sales offering remarkable material across a wide selection of collecting categories. The first part of the English Literature, History, Science, Children’s Books and Illustrations sale will begin on the afternoon of the 9th. The highlight of this session will no doubt be the extraordinary selection of Science material, led by two manuscript leaves from On the Origin of Species by Darwin, a pair of Nobel Prizes, and an exceptional selection of lots relating to the Lyell family, directly from Kinnordy House.
The next morning the second session of this sale will be led by the historic offering of The Original Map of the Hundred Acre Wood, alongside four other illustrations by E. H. Shepard.
On the afternoon of the 10th, Sotheby’s is delighted to present the eighth part in our record-breaking sale series The Library of an English Bibliophile. Significant editions from Milne, Yeats, Joyce and Lawrence all feature as well as two important inscribed copies of Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, and Carroll’s legendary annotated copy of the “sixtieth thousand” edition of Through the Looking Glass.
With well over 500 lots offered and estimates ranging from £100 to £100,000 these two days of sales are not to be missed.
