FOUAD ELKOURY, SHERIHAN (FROM THE EGYPTIAN CINEMA SERIES). ESTIMATE 18,000–25,000 USD
The actress first found fame aged 12 in the movie Ketta Ala Nar (Cat On Fire) and went on to make another 20 films to date. She became one of the country’s best-loved stars with her appearances on the nightly musical quiz Fawazeer, which aired during the holy month of Ramadan.
Here, Sotheby’s Mai Eldib, a life-long fan of the star, recalls her memories of Sherihan…
“Sherihan to me has always been a symbol of my childhood. Growing up during the months of Ramadan she would be the key actress in TV serials and her name became synonymous with Fawazeer, the nightly musical quiz show.
“Not only that but she was the icon for any child of the ‘90s. She was part of every advert, movie, TV show and fashion shoot. Her fashion style was the epitome of the '90s look. Her long black cascading hair was part and parcel of her identity, long before the age of hair extensions.
“She disappeared in the late ‘90s after several difficult years that were mired by sickness, debilitating car accidents and cancer. However, she made a comeback after the 2011 uprising looking as if she hadn't aged a single day.
“For the past 10 years my laptop display picture has been that eerie image shot by Fouad El Khoury of a young Sherihan, which features in the Boundless: Dubai sale.
“Her fame is such that like Madonna she is simply known as Sherihan, no surname, nothing. A true icon.”
