Joanna Gong joined Sotheby’s in 2019 as a Specialist. Prior to being based in New York, Joanna spent a year rotating between the Geneva and Hong Kong offices, enabling her to connect clients with their ideal markets and opportunities. In her role she helps facilitate business getting and sales worldwide. Most recently Joanna has part taken first hand in the new digital revolution of Sotheby’s, helping facilitate three consecutive ‘white glove’ sales online and a record breaking live sale in Hong Kong- successfully helping her clients navigate the art world during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Prior to Sotheby’s, Ms. Gong was a private jewelry consultant and entrepreneur in New York, Paris, and Beijing. She frequently organized jewelry salons and lectures in mainland China, focusing on jewelry history and market education between the East and West. Through her work she has frequented over 40 countries, visiting trade shows, stone mines, and international patrons.
A Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, Ms. Gong holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors in Jewelry Design and a minor in Art History from Pratt Institute. She was one of the first foreign disciples of Japanese silver master Hiroshi Suzuki at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. In addition to her years on the jeweler’s bench, Ms. Gong also completed a lapidary course in colored stones and faceting from the Institute of Gem Trading in Bangkok. She is a USPAP compliant appraiser.
