Biography

Janet Tham, Assistant Vice President, Watches and Clocks Specialist, is based in Sotheby’s New York.

Janet Tham joined Sotheby’s in the winter of 2014 with Post Sale Services, and entered the New York Watches Department in 2016. Her affinity for beguiling objects began with her father, an engraver and diamond setter operating in Asia and the US. Before joining Sotheby’s, Janet began her career in New York as a restoration framer with great sensitivity toward the history of ornaments, gilding techniques, and conservation.

In her tenure at Sotheby’s, Janet has been instrumental in new market initiatives in Canada and the United States, and has brought significant private collections to the market. In 2022, Janet led the charity auction of the Jacob & Co. Astronomia Bucherer BLUE, the first triple axis tourbillon ever to leave the earth’s atmosphere, shuttled on the first private, all-commercial mission into the cosmos.

Janet is a graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a bachelor’s degree in Art History and Economics, and has fluency in English and Cantonese.

Janet Tham has successfully completed the coursework and examination in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.
