Emily Black

Emily Black worked as a specialist in the Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Department in London from 1993 until 2001. Her responsibilities included preparation of the London Old Master Paintings sales, private treaty sales, business getting in Austria and advising private collectors worldwide. In 1997 she brought to sale an exceptional Pieter Brueghel the Younger, which sold for a then record-breaking £1.9 million and in 1998 she oversaw the private treaty sale of a major work by Jan Brueghel the Elder. Her expertise covers European Old Master Paintings in general, although her particular interest lies in Italian painting and sculpture.

Following her move to Switzerland, Emily has been active as a freelance art-history lecturer and researcher and Swiss 20th Century art has become one of her main interests. In 2010 she joined the committee of the Friends of the Geneva Musée d’art et d’histoire, where she co-organizes their cultural program. Returning to Sotheby’s in 2015, she joined the Geneva office as Specialist in Old Master Paintings and in a liaison capacity for a number of other departments, such as Old Master Drawings, Furniture, European Sculpture and Wine.

Emily Black graduated from Oxford University (German & Italian) and the Courtauld Institute of Art with a MA in History of Art.
