Biography

Dr Philip W Errington joined Sotheby's in 1999 and is a Director.

He specialises in English Literature, Private Press, Children's Books, Illustrated Books and Drawings. He has worked on numerous English Literature single-owner sales including George Cosmatos, Frederick B. Adams, John R.B. Brett-Smith, Annette Campbell-White, E.H. Shepard's Winnie-the-Pooh and "Books for Cooks".

In December 2007 he achieved a world record for a modern literary manuscript and children's book. An autograph manuscript of J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard was sold on behalf of The Children's Voice (now Lumos) for £1.95m.

He has widely published on John Masefield: his edition of Masefield's selected poems (Sea-Fever: Selected Poems) was published in 2005 by Carcanet and his new selection of sea poetry and prose (Spunyarn) was published in 2011 by Penguin Classics. His major bibliography, John Masefield-The "Great Auk" of English Literature was published in 2004 by The British Library and nominated for the fourteenth ILAB bibliography prize. In 2000, he was appointed a visiting research fellow within the University of London. In 2004, he was appointed an honorary research fellow of the Department of English Language and Literature, University College London. In 2005, he organised a two-day conference on 'The Fate and State of Removable Dust-Jackets' at the Institute of English Studies, University of London.

Philip joined the firm after a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from University College London.
