Alexander Eblen joined Sotheby’s in 2017 as a Senior Specialist in the department. In his role, he works within the greater New York metropolitan area and often travels to the South Atlantic region to assist clients in all aspects of acquisition, consignment and appraisal services.
Mr Eblen’s 18-year career has been spent entirely within the gem and jewelry industry. As one of the only jewelry specialists to have worked in the laboratory field on the identification and research of colored gems, he brings a unique perspective to the subject. Following time in the wholesale gem trade and retail arenas, he has been active in the jewelry auction market for the last 11 years. As an expert on the international colored stone market, he is a frequent lecturer on gem origin, current treatments and valuation. He also consults with collectors on the buying and selling of important gems both traditional and obscure.
A Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America, Mr. Eblen received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Illinois. He is a USPAP Compliant Appraiser.
