Sotheby’s Artist Quarterly
Works by Darja Shatalova
"CONGRUENCE"
26 April–18 June 2024
Monday–Friday | 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
Darja Shatalova is a multidisciplinary artist based in Vienna. Born in Russia and raised in Uzbekistan and Germany, she first studied art and mathematics as a teaching degree in Cologne and then Transmedia Art at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.
Mathematical concepts play a decisive role in Darja Shatalova's artistic practice, whereby she devotes particular attention to spatial concepts and the architecture of exhibition venues. This is clearly evident in her current exhibition "Congruence", in which she explores architectural structures and the symbolic language of ancient civilizations in Mesoamerica and Mesopotamia/Egypt. By skillfully combining representative motifs from both civilizations, the work points to a possible transoceanic and transtemporal dialogue that aims to promote an understanding of interrelationships.
The term "congruence", which comes from mathematics and describes two congruent geometric shapes, refers to the principle of reciprocity and points to a mutual exchange. The work makes it clear that events that appear to be separated in time and space are always connected and are in a permanent state of interaction.
Darja Shatalova's artworks can be found in the collection of the Wien Museum, the Artothek des Bundes and in numerous (inter)national libraries. She has received several prizes and scholarships, including the BMKOES Start Scholarship for Fine Arts in 2019, the BMBWF Working Scholarship in 2020 and the BMEIA "On the Road Again" Scholarship in 2022.
