Sotheby’s Chinese Works of Art Expert Visiting Your Area | Week of 13 May

The Chinese art market remains incredibly strong, with Sotheby’s leading the field internationally. This March, almost 800 rare pieces of porcelain, jade, sculpture, bronzes, and other works of art spanning 4,000 years of Chinese history were offered in five auctions in New York. The sales realized $30.1 million USD, ten million more than the low estimate, with collectors from America, Europe and Asia bidding competitively to take home these treasured objects.

A gilt-bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara from the late Tang/Five Dynasties period, found by the consignor at an estate sale for less than $100 many years ago, soared past its estimate of $60,000 – 80,000 to sell for $2.1 million. Other noteworthy pieces include an important and complete set of the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment by the Qianlong Emperor, achieving $2.7 million, more than nine times its low estimate, and an impressive 18th century blue and white ‘dragon’ moonflask, which realized $920,000. We invite you to take a look at more of our 2019 auction highlights overleaf.

We are accepting consignments for our September 2019 auctions, and would be delighted to speak with you. Hannah Thompson, specialist in Chinese works of art, will be in your area the week of 13 May to make house visits, provide complimentary auction appraisals, and accept Chinese art for our upcoming sales.

Alternatively, you may submit images of your piece(s) online via email (asiaweek@sothebys.com) or our online auction estimate platform. Upon review, our specialists will be in touch directly.

To schedule an appointment, and to learn more about the market or Sotheby’s auctions in this field, please do not hesitate to contact us or Cindy Qi at asiaweek@sothebys.com or 212 606 7332.
