Catalogue Note
World-renowned musician Daniel Johnston was an accomplished visual artist who exhibited his comic-inspired drawings internationally, including in the Whitney Biennial in 2006. In this self-portrait, the artist appears surrounded by characters and symbols from his unique personal mythology. Johnston draws a female torso (a symbol of sex) with an eyeball by his side, while Vile Corrupt (symbol of Evil) holds a limp Jeremiah the Innocent (symbol of Good) and Captain America looks on.
