Leading the contemporary Chinese section of our anniversary sale is Zeng Fanzhi’s Mask Series no. 6 from 1999. A monumentally important work from the artist Fanzhi’s Mask Series, this piece belong to a body of work that would ultimately become one of the most significant ever created in the history of Chinese contemporary art. Skilfully juxtaposing highly symbolic motifs to construct his enigmatic and allusive compositions, Mask Series no. 6 (1999) not only unravels a pervasive sense of doubt and uncertainty that belie a seemingly celebratory moment in China’s history at the turn of the millennium, but also documents Zeng Fanzhi’s own inner struggle in understanding the convoluted modern world. A breakthrough composition, the dazzling and mature Mask Series no. 6 was the first in the series to depict Zeng’s central character – possibly the artist himself - standing on a peak, a setting that would go on to be a major motif in later iterations.
當代中國藝術板塊重點呈獻曾梵志的《面具系列1999第6號》。曾梵志把極具象徵意義的元素巧妙地佈置在畫面上，組成的構圖寓意深刻，但又撲朔迷離。本作不但揭示了中國在千禧年之際看似繁榮、卻到處潛伏著懷疑和不確定的社會氣氛，同時亦記錄了曾梵志嘗試理解錯綜複雜的現代世界時的內心困境。《面具系列1999第6號》反映了構圖上的突破，這是面具系列中第一幅將中心人物——可能代表了藝術家自身——置於山峰之上的作品，後來的作品亦多次出現畫中人獨立於山巔的構圖。
