Explore one of the last important groups of Fabergé animals in private hands

The second part of a magnificent family collection of extraordinary snuff boxes incorporating a variety of materials, such as hardstone, lacquer, porcelain, mother of pearl and enamel, impressively demonstrates the inventiveness and skillset of the eighteenth century <i>bijoutiers</i> across Europe. Sotheby’s is honoured to present these masterpieces, including a red lacquer and piqué box by the celebrated <i>orfèvre-bijoutier</i> Louis Roucel, an elegant carnelian <i>boîte-à-deux tabacs&nbsp; </i>by Noel Hardivilliers, a gold-mounted lapis lazuli and micromosaic snuff box by the Dresden court jeweller Johann Christian Neuber, as well as rare and beautiful eighteenth century enamel boxes made in Vienna, Paris, Stockholm and Germany.<br><br>A documentary Meissen porcelain snuff box impresses with impeccable provenance, like so many other boxes in this collection, turning these gold boxes into precious portable works of art with historic significance.

A Treasury of Vertu II 

Around 85 gold boxes from the Alan and Simone Hartman collection will be offered as a continuation of the enormous success of the first <i>A Park Avenue Treasury </i>sale in New York in June 2024. Especially the early nineteenth-century German gold boxes assembled by the visionary collector Alan Hartman have now allowed for new discoveries of goldsmiths and <i>bijoutiers </i>active<i> </i>in Berlin and Hanau, such as Georg Wancke, Freres Jordan or Müller, Bury &amp; Jünger. The micromosaics and hardstone boxes beautifully complement the vibrant enamels of every color of the rainbow from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, also representing well-established enamel painters such as Jean-Louis Richter of Geneva.

A selection of twentieth century <i>objets de luxe </i>transports the art of the goldsmith, the enameller and the lapidary into the twentieth century.&nbsp;<br><br>Highlights include a pair of jewelled enamel cufflinks purchased by Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich himself, as well as a gold-mounted rock-crystal parasol set by Tiffany &amp; Co, formerly in the collection of American socialite Ellen Yuille Blair. A carefully-assembled private collection of Art Déco vanity and cigarette cases in black lacquer, jade, burgau or hardstone shows the elegant vision of retailers such as Janesisch, Cartier and Boucheron.<br><br>Furthermore, diamond-set gold and enamel <i>objets d’art</i> by the London goldsmiths McCabe &amp; McCarter are emblematic of the colourful splendour of the 1980s.
