The present box and cover is charmingly glazed in a rich amber color of marbled effect. Perhaps intentionally designed, there is an abstract flowerhead in the center of the top and bottom, pointing to the potter's skillful manipulation of the technique. For a similarly decorated box and cover, see one illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 3 (I), London, 2006, pl. 1243, where the author notes how the box follows the shape of its silver prototype with its slightly domed top and bottom as well as how it is set off from the straight sides by a groove. See also a similarly glazed cup and tripod saucer as well as a bowl, in the Palace Museum, Beijing (accession nos 新00059687 and 新00082701); and a pillow included in Chinese Ceramics, Han to Song, Marchant, London, 2018, cat. no. 7.
