The present meiping showcases the adept and unrestrained painting style of Cizhou potters, skillfully capturing the vitality of flowers, reminiscent of a traditional Chinese ink painting. This type of Cizhou painted meiping is favored by many and examples can be found in many famous collections and museums worldwide. Compare a similar meiping in the Palace Museum, Beijing, published on their website (accession no. 新00105261); another in the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo, illustrated in Mary Tregear, Song Ceramics, London, 1982, p. 93, no. 93; and a further example predominantly painted with leaves with a flatter mouth, in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, exhibited in Song Ceramics, Utensils of Sublime Beauty, Tokyo, 2018, pl. 18.
See further examples of similar meiping; one formerly in the J. C. Thomson Collection, exhibited in Sung Dynasty Wares, The Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1949, cat. no. 103, and illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 1, pl. 499; another in the collection of Raymond A. Bidwell, illustrated in Warren E. Cox, The Book of Pottery and Porcelain, vol. I, New York, pl. 381, and sold at Christie’s New York, 21st March 2013, lot 1179; and a further in the Jingguantang Collection, sold in the same rooms, 20th March 1997, lot 68.
