This small jade Buddhist plaque is most notable for its long dedicatory inscription incised on the reserve, which indicates it was once owned by Dai Zengjing (d. 491 AD), a famous historical figure and one of the most important founding generals of the Southern Qi dynasty (479-502). According to the Xiaoshanxian zhi gao [Draft of the history of Xiaoshan] compiled and published in the Republic period, Dai Zengjing was one of the bravest military generals of the Xiao Daocheng (427-482), who founded the Southern Qi dynasty. Dai led and participated many important military campaigns, which earned him high official positions at the court, including as the Minister of War at the Central Army under the Prince of Luling and the governor of Gaoping.
