Description

Japanese wood box (3)

Diameter 4¾ in., 12 cm

The humble appearance of bowls produced at the Jian kilns in Fujian province made them appropriate for use in Buddhist temples. The Song Emperor Huizong (r. 1101-1125) stated that black-glazed bowls, especially those decorated with 'hare's fur' like the present example, were the most desirable. A closely related example to the present bowl is illustrated in Robert D. Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers, Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge, 1995, pl. 79.
