David Avison (American, 1937-2004) A significant figure in the field of panoramic photography, David Avison photographed Chicago’s urban landscapes using wide-angle lens photography. Avison’s photographs capture both the vibrancy of Chicago and the cultural climate of time the photographs were taken. In the 1970s, Avison combined his interests in physics and photography by constructing his own panoramic cameras. Avison received a Ph.D. in physics from Brown University and later completed an M.S. in photography at Institute of Design/Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. His work has been exhibited at the Illinois State Museum, Springfield, IL, and the Art Institute of Chicago among others. His work is held in the collections of the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY, and Figge Art Museum, Davenport, IA.
