Michael Lau, known as the “godfather of designer toys,” is an important figure in the worldwide collectibles scene. Originating from Hong Kong, Lau is famous largely due to his talents in illustration and toy design. His work has had a significant influence on toy manufacturers, street culture, as well as other artists and musicians. Lau held his first solo painting exhibition at the Pao Galleries of the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1993.

The Nike SB Zoom Blazer Low QS Michael Lau ‘Salvator Michael’ was released in 2019 in collaboration with Michael Lau. Fashion and streetwear have been alongside Lau’s artistic practice and he has been a collaborator with Nike since 2006. The initial release debuted in conjunction with the artist’s “COLLECT THEM ALL!” exhibition.

The shoe takes inspiration from the characters seen in Michael Lau’s work and fuses them with the iconic Blazer low silhouette. The upper is constructed of canvas fabric, a textile that is ubiquitous in painting and is often the surface of choice for Lau. The canvas is cut into different pieces and comes together to create a unique shoe with a collage feel. The shoe sits on a white midsole with industrial-style staples found at the outsole. Lau incorporates more art world details such as the auction house-style lot card design on the right heel tab.
