First edition. Samuel Chase, a signer of the Declaration and Supreme Court Justice, was impeached for alleged partisan misdemeanors in the political trials of Fries and Callender. The Senate voted to acquit Chase of all charges, establishing an unofficial precedent with respect to independence of the judiciary.
