Dune landscape with travellers

bears remnants of signature lower right: Wynants

oil on canvas

canvas: 12 ½ by 15 ⅝ in.; 31.8 by 39.7 cm.

framed: 15 ⅜ by 18 ⅛ in.; 39.1 by 46 cm.

Anonymous sale, New York, Sotheby's, 6 February 1997, lot 165 (as Manner of Jan Wijnants);

Where acquired by the present collector.

This sun-drenched dune landscape is an 18th-century copy after a painting in the Landesmuseum in Mainz (inv. no. 152) previously attributed to Jan Wijnants. Though the Mainz version similarly bears Wijnants' signature and the date 1675 or 1646, it is now thought to have more in common with the work of Jan Wouwerman.1
