Description
Isle of Fury / L'isola della Furia (1936) Poster, Italian, First Italian release 1937
Artist: Luigi Martinati (1893-1984)
Unframed: 79 x 55 in. (201 x 140 cm)
The stunning artwork by Luigi Martinati features the action scene where Eric Blake (Donald Woods) saves Val Stevens (Humphrey Bogart) from an octopus. This poster would have been pasted on billboards, so it's sheer size and powerful imagery, would have been extremely eye-catching in 1937.
This poster is the only example to have surfaced to-date.
This adventure film was directed Frank McDonald, who directed more than a hundred films. The cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Margaret Lindsay and Donald Woods. This was one of Bogart's first leading roles. The film is an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's 1932 book The Narrow Corner. It is set in the South Seas, and tells the story of a shipwrecked gangster, Val Stevens (Bogart,) and the detective, Eric Blake (Woods), who has been sent to arrest him.
