In the early 1950s Vaughan became increasingly aware of the importance of the painted surface as an expressive pictorial element. This manifested itself in a more painterly application with varied, directional brushstrokes and richer, more eloquent build-ups of pigment. His reduced, economical palette of slatey greys and sap greens evokes a feeling of early springtime, before the first sprouting of forest foliage. Jagged forms suggest agricultural fencing while vertical and curved forms describe tree boughs and banks of shrubbery.
